How We Choose These Eco Laundry Sheets?

When it comes to finding products we love and want to recommend, we consider a brand’s commitment to the planet first and foremost.

How far past its products do a brand’s efforts go toward protecting and bettering the planet? The brands we’ve chosen to include here fit our idea of what a sustainable future looks like.

We also look at specific criteria, like third-party certifications, to determine how well a product and brand actually perform. Brands can make a lot of claims about their products, and third-party certifiers guarantee these claims with rigorous and thorough testing.

Some of the certifications we’ve come to trust wholeheartedly include:

  • EPA’s Safer Choice
  • EWG Verified
  • USDA Biobased
  • Leaping Bunny

This isn’t a comprehensive list… There are a lot of third-party certifications! However, these certifications are some of the most common and most rigorously tested certifications available.

We see these often on cleaning products like laundry detergent, so it made sense to look for them while hunting for the perfect non-toxic laundry detergent sheet.

EPA’s Safer Choice and EWG Verified are both dedicated to ensuring product safety. Each has its criteria for product safety, so check out their websites for more information. Both the EPA’s Safer Choice and USDA Biobased are certifications provided by leading government agencies, something that we love to see.

Leaping Bunny, another favorite certification at Zestain ensures a product has not been tested on animals and does not use any animal products.

Beyond this broad criteria, we also took a magnifying glass to some of the claims we saw brands make about their laundry sheets being eco-friendly. Recent research has painted PVA, a common ingredient in laundry detergent sheets, in a very bad light. We’ll get into that more later, but this played a role in how we chose the laundry sheets for this article.

Botanical Home Store Laundry Detergent Strips

PVA-Free
Small Business

Botanical Home Store Laundry Detergent Strips

  • Sustainability: PVA Free
  • Price: $18.00/60 sheets (0.30)
  • Made in Sweden

Botanical Home Store’s non-toxic laundry sheets were the ONLY product we saw that was specifically formulated to avoid PVA!

We thought that was impossible given the nature of laundry detergent strips, but Botanical Home Store proved us wrong. Its products are actually plastic-free, a claim we’ve watched slowly disappear from other brands’ marketing materials.

An awesome product like this gives us chills.

Owned and operated by a wildlife ecologist from Florida, Botanical Home Store is one of the coolest small businesses we’ve seen in the eco-friendly sphere. Because it is a small business, we don’t see any third-party certifications.

However, we’ve talked about this in the past on Zestain and we’ll repeat it here: third-party certifications are expensive. While they offer shoppers the best way to verify a company’s claims, not all brands can afford the lab testing and product verification fees. For some certifications, these can cost $10,000. Ouch!

Instead of always counting on those certifications, which can discredit small businesses and novel ideas, we try to look at the big picture. Can a brand reasonably afford to pay for third-party certifications? If the answer is yes and they haven’t, we get pretty skeptical. But for small businesses like Botanical Home Store, we try to dig deep into their products until we feel satisfied with their claims.

In the case of Botanical Home Store’s laundry sheets, we thought these were a perfect solution to the problem with PVA. BoHoS offers their sheets at a reasonable price point and in both a scented and fragrance-free option. It also offers a subscription service with a discount just in case you decide you love its products.

Earth Breeze Laundry Detergent Eco Sheets

  • Sustainability: Leaping Bunny Certified, 1% For the Planet, Non-profit initiatives

Earth Breeze was one of the first brands to pioneer the laundry sheet approach. Its efforts helped revolutionize the laundry and cleaning industry with its no-mess, no-waste approach to washing clothes.

Founded in 2019 by Jon Wedel, Earth Breeze quickly gained recognition for its innovative and novel approach to laundry that prioritized the environment without compromising on cleanliness.

At the core of Earth Breeze’s business is a deep commitment to reducing plastic waste. Its laundry sheets come packaged in biodegradable materials, replacing the traditional plastic jugs that have been a mainstay in the detergent market for decades.

Earth Breeze’s laundry sheets are made with natural, non-toxic ingredients that are gentle on the skin while still being excellent cleaning agents.

It is a member of 1% for the Planet, a program that encourages companies to donate at least 1% of their annual profits to programs designed to protect the planet. They also make donations for every 10 detergent strips purchased. Customers can choose where their donations will go.

How Do Laundry Sheets Work?

Laundry detergent sheets work just like conventional liquid detergent without the hassle of heavy bottles and spilled messes.

Laundry sheets are thin, paper-like sheets filled with a pre-measured amount of concentrated detergent. They dissolve in water during the washing cycle. For most sheets, you can add them directly to the washing machine with your clothes. We always recommend checking the manufacturer’s instructions if you’re unsure, though.

Once the machine starts, the water dissolves the detergent sheet. The sheet breaks down further while the machine agitates.

When your clothes are done washing, the machine rinses and you’re all done!

Benefits of Switching to Eco-Friendly Laundry Detergent Sheets

Eco-friendly laundry detergent sheets have a whole host of benefits. While switching to them might be a little bit of a learning curve, the pros outweigh the cons when it comes to lightweight, easy-to-use laundry options.

Protecting the Environment

One of the biggest reasons for switching to eco-friendly laundry detergent sheets is their limited environmental impact.

Conventional laundry detergents rely on (relatively) heavy plastic jugs. These jugs, while sometimes recyclable, can’t be processed at every recycling plant and are difficult to fully clean out. The result? Most plastic laundry detergent bottles end up in landfills or as plastic pollution in our oceans.

Laundry detergent sheets, in comparison, come in recyclable, biodegradable, and compostable containers that can be responsibly disposed of when you’re finished.

Shipping Costs and Emissions

Another major problem with the plastic jug approach is the environmental cost of shipping.

Liquid laundry detergent is heavy—just think about how miserable it is to drag up the stairs after grocery shopping. Multiply that by thousands… The picture gets pretty clear. Loading conventional laundry detergent onto trucks and ships creates a taxing carbon footprint for the industry.

When you consider the logistics of shipping a few thousand boxes of laundry sheets in comparison, it’s easy to see why these are a better choice for large-scale manufacturing. Each box of sheets weighs only a few grams and is small enough to pack much more efficiently.

Non-Toxic and Hypoallergenic Options

Many of the brands we’ve included in this article offer options that are fragrance-free, making laundry sheets a good choice for people with sensitivities and kids. We’ve seen a lot of reviews from customers who said that their skin issues only cleared up once they switched to an eco-friendly laundry detergent sheet.

Besides that, most of the laundry sheets we spotlighted here are free of a whole host of unpleasant chemicals and compounds. Laundry sheets are often paraben-, phthalate-, and phosphate-free.

While most brands offer scented options, almost every laundry sheet brand we’ve seen has a choice for a fragrance-free detergent sheet. This is a perfect way to cut back on your exposure to synthetic fragrances.

Brand Ethos

While it’s not a fool-proof way to find brands worth supporting, a lot of the companies we’ve included in this article are dedicated to sustainable and eco-friendly initiatives. By supporting these kinds of companies, you’re making a choice that has a wider impact on consumer choices.

By supporting companies that look for innovative approaches to household issues, you’re providing these companies with feedback that says you support their mission. That’s exactly the kind of impact we need to have to make global change.

What Ingredients to Look for in Non-Toxic Laundry Detergent Sheets?

When you’re looking for a non-toxic laundry detergent sheet, you should look for detergents made with natural, plant-derived ingredients. Try to avoid synthetic fragrances, dyes, bleaches, and brighteners. All of these things can damage clothing, potentially shortening the lifespan of your clothes and linens.

Look for products that are:

  • Paraben-free
  • Phthalate-free
  • Phosphate-free
  • Dye-free
  • Bleach-free

What is PVA in Laundry Sheets?

We wanted to address the elephant in the room: PVA.

Polyvinyl alcohol, or PVA, is a compound used in most laundry sheets and pods to create the film that keeps the product together. PVA is considered biodegradable, but recent research has raised some concerns about the safety and ecological impact of polyvinyl alcohol because it is a plastic.

PVA is considered safe by the EPA. However, research has shown that PVA needs very specific conditions to fully biodegrade in wastewater treatment plants. Unfortunately, most wastewater treatment plants don’t meet these requirements. The result is a buildup of PVA in water sources around the world.

Do All Laundry Sheets Contain PVA?

The bad news is that most do. The research on PVA is relatively new, so we can’t fault brands that use it for their products. And there are still a lot of competing ideas on whether or not PVA is dangerous. As of right now, the EPA says PVA is fine

However, we did find one PVA-free laundry detergent sheet: Botanical Home Stores. Seeing this had us jumping for joy.

Like a lot of consumers who were around for the initial buzz surrounding laundry detergent sheets, we felt pretty let down by the news that some of these products had been marketed as “plastic-free” when they weren’t.

Botanical Home Store’s sheets are free from PVA, making them a genuinely plastic-free alternative to traditional laundry detergent.

Final Thoughts on Earth-Friendly Laundry Detergent Sheets

Laundry detergent sheets offer a huge range of benefits. This product has single-handedly revolutionized laundry routines everywhere with its unique approach to cleaning.

If you’re looking for a way to clean up your laundry, laundry detergent strips are a great choice that’ll ensure a non-toxic clean every time.
