A Quick Breakdown of Tru Earth Laundry Strips Safety

  • Safety: Made with non-toxic, biodegradable ingredients, Tru Earth’s laundry strips are a safe alternative to traditional laundry detergents.
  • Sustainability: Without all the plastic packaging, these laundry strips are an excellent choice for anyone looking to cut back on waste.
  • Packaging: Made with biodegradable plastic and in a recyclable cardboard sleeve, Tru Earth’s laundry strips are an excellent choice to cut back on plastic.
  • Ingredients: Plant-derived and animal-free, Tru Earth’s Eco Strips ingredients are clean and non-toxic.

Are Tru Earth Laundry Strips Non-Toxic & Safe?

Tru Earth’s laundry strips are formulated to be free of phosphates, parabens, added dyes, and chlorine bleach, making them one of the best non-toxic choices for laundry detergent. If you’d like to avoid fragrances, Tru Earth also offers a fragrance-free option in addition to their small collection of essential oil-based scents.

If you’re worried about allergies and sensitivities, Tru Earth is hypoallergenic and designed to work with even the most sensitive skin. Many customers with sensitive skin reported these strips as the only detergent they found that worked without irritating their skin. Nice!

We were a little surprised to see the EWG gave Tru Earth a “D” rating. Their biggest gripe was with the mineral oil used in the formula, though we think the concentration is low enough for this to be a low-risk issue. We recommend doing your own research into the EWG’s Tru Earth ingredient ratings

Tru Earth Laundry Strips Ingredients

Because of their unique formulation, Tru Earth’s laundry strips have a couple of unusual ingredients. That includes polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), which has gotten a lot of flack in recent years for being a microplastic. We’ll look more at that soon.

Some of the other ingredients include:

  • Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate (a coconut-derived surfactant)
  • Sodium gluconate (a plant-derived, food-grade water softener)
  • Vegetable glycerin
  • Corn starch
  • Paraffin Liquidum (a light mineral oil)

This isn’t everything included in Tru Earth Eco Strips, but anything we didn’t mention is plant-based.

Are Tru Earth ingredients safe? We think so. All of these ingredients are safe for use in your laundry. They’re also plant-derived, making Tru Earth a vegan-friendly laundry detergent.

The scented laundry detergent strips, like the fresh linen and lilac breeze options, include added fragrances. However, Tru Earth says that these fragrances are derived from essential oils. This makes them safe for household use.

Are Tru Earth Laundry Strips Eco-Friendly?

Tru Earth’s laundry strips are designed to be environmentally friendly. Unlike traditional liquid laundry detergents, Tru Earth is packaged without the bulky bottles and plastic that make laundry detergent so wasteful and expensive to ship. Instead, Tru Earth uses biodegradable cardboard sleeves.

According to Tru Earth, each strip weighs less than 3 grams compared to the nearly 40 grams needed for each load of laundry with a liquid detergent. Shipping and transporting accounts for a massive portion of a product’s carbon footprint.

Tru Earth is dedicated to reducing the impact our choices have on the environment. Their products are all designed to reduce the waste caused by transportation.

We do want to point out that these laundry strips are formulated with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), which a growing body of research has shown contributes to microplastic waste

PVA is technically biodegradable, but most wastewater treatment plants in the United States lack the infrastructure and microbes to break it down properly. The safety of PVA to humans and the environment is not well understood or researched.

Despite this, we still think Tru Earth’s strips are a great choice for anyone who wants to reduce their plastic waste. Until there’s more research into PVA and its potential dangers, we’ll take the EPA’s lead on it. PVA has what the EPA calls “low-concern characteristics,” meaning it shows little evidence of toxicity.

Tru Earth Laundry Detergent Products

Tru Earth offers a selection of detergent strips, including several different fragrances and their Platinum strips. We’ll dive into those here.

  • Costs include:
    32 loads – $14.95
    64 loads – $28.95
    384 loads – $120.00

Probably their most popular scent, the reviews on the fresh linen detergent strips are overwhelmingly positive. Customers say the scent is subtle but present and that their clothes come out smelling clean and fresh after each wash.

The fresh linen laundry detergent strips are free from harsh chemicals, enzymes, dyes, and chlorine bleach. This choice includes a fragrance, but Tru Earth says it is derived from essential oils.

One of the biggest recommendations we saw was to take these for traveling. The detergent strips store easily, and the pleasant smell is a favorite for your suitcase.

  • Costs include:
    8 loads – $9.95
    32 loads – $12.90
    64 loads – $25.95
    384 loads – $109.00

Customers say this scent is much stronger than the fresh linen option, so it’s a great choice if you love for your clothes to smell heavenly when you throw them on in the morning. The lilac scent is also very lilac. Think of summer days and robust purple flowers.

The Lilac Breeze laundry detergent strips are free from harsh chemicals, enzymes, dyes, and chlorine bleach. This choice includes a fragrance, but Tru Earth says it is derived from essential oils.

Tru Earth Eco-strips Platinum Laundry Detergent (Fragrance-Free)

  • Costs include:
    8 loads – $9.95
    32 loads – $12.90
    64 loads – $25.95
    384 loads – $109.00

Reviews are pretty mixed on the fragrance-free option. Some customers report a slight scent, but it seems a lot of folks got mixed up on the “fresh linen” versus “fragrance-free” choices. Be sure to order the green packaging if you want a fragrance-free option!

We saw a lot of reviews from people with sensitive skin who loved this product. They said that Tru Earth Eco Strips were the only eco-friendly laundry detergent that cleaned their clothes without irritating their skin. This product is perfect for anyone looking to avoid artificial fragrances or harsh chemicals.

  • Costs include:
    32 loads – $12.90
    64 loads – $25.95
    384 loads – $109.00

We were a little surprised that the detergent marketed to babies had a fragrance in it. That’s generally a no-go for little ones. The baby scent smells heavily of baby powder, which a lot of reviewers seemed frustrated by. We recommend going with the fragrance-free option if you have a little one with sensitive skin.

This was a big win for the people who loved the baby powder fragrance, and the smell was long-lasting.

Difference Between Tru Earth Platinum and Regular

According to this website, the Tru Earth Platinum strips are a more highly concentrated version of the regular ones. Each strip contains 5x the formula of the regular Tru Earth formula. The Platinum formula is perfect for getting out gross stains like oil, grease, and coffee from your clothes.

If you’re worried the regular detergent strips won’t be enough for your workout gear, we recommend giving the Platinum version a shot. The regular detergent is great for everyday wear, but Platinum’s concentrated formula will get your clothes extra fresh.

The Platinum also works well in cold water, helping you save energy and protect your clothes. Hot water, which the regular strips work best in, can cause colors to fade and even damage certain fabrics. With the Platinum, you can wash even your most delicate pieces without worrying about the water temperature.

The regular laundry detergent strips are great for everyday use. Clothes that are lightly soiled or have been pretreated for stains work best with this formula.

Whichever strip you decide to go with, the Tru Earth laundry detergents are a great choice for tight spaces and eco-friendly households. These laundry strips are great for slipping into your pocket on your way to the laundry mat or keeping tucked in a tiny cabinet above your washer machine.

How To Use Tru Earth Laundry Strips?

Tru Earth’s laundry strips are super easy to use and don’t make the same mess as traditional detergents. They’re a good alternative to conventional laundry detergents that rely on plastic bottles and harsh chemicals.

For best results, we recommend following Tru Earth’s instructions on how to use the laundry strips.

Step 1: Tear a Tru Earth strip into two halves.

You can mix and match this amount based on your needs. For smaller loads, you can use half a strip. Two strips work best for larger loads or ones that are particularly soiled.

Step 2: Toss the strip into your washer machine.

For top loaders, just put the strip inside your machine’s drum. For front loaders, put the strip in your machine’s detergent compartment.

Step 3: Add your clothes and start the cycle!

While Tru Earth strips work in hot and cold water, we found the strips tend to work best if they had a chance to dissolve in hot water first.

If you’re looking to soften your clothes or add an extra boost of fragrance, Tru Earth also offers Eco Strip fabric softeners in fresh linen and fragrance-free options. You can add these fabric softener strips at the same time you would your laundry detergent. No extra steps!

What Are Customers Saying About Tru Earth Laundry Strips

“Tru Earth laundry strips are amazing – nearly no packaging, super easy to use (literally throw the strip into the machine). I’ve turned my whole family onto them”
Reddit u/mankers1989

“I gotta just pop on in here before I reorder my next pack. These laundry strips have been AMAZING. I love that I’m not using a giant plastic jug; it takes up WAY less space, and I can easily adjust the amount of soap I need. If you’re planning to switch, I recommend buying the aluminum tin that they sell (or use any other type of container) so that you prevent dropping them in the depths of your laundry room lol.

I’ve been using these white vinegar for cleaning and smell removal, and then wool dryer balls with essential oils as my laundry supplies, and my clothes always come out so clean and fresh, and I don’t have to use harsh detergents on anything other than rough stains. These are fragrant but not super fragrant, so if you want your clothes to have a specific smell, I’d recommend the dryer ball and essential oil method to give them a nice boost.”
– Amazon review from Jessicawshaw.

“A friend introduced us to this product. We were hesitant to try it but wanted to be more eco-friendly. We were wowed! The clothes not only came out clean, but it did not bother my husband’s sensitive skin. With this product, we no longer have to worry about the detergent we are using. No more hauling around big plastic jugs, making this a great space saver. It arrived in a small package, ready to go. Simply tear off a sheet and throw it in the washer. No more need for big containers. We are thrilled with this environmentally friendly product and highly recommend it.”
– Amazon review from Led.

“These laundry strips come in a recyclable package, they clean my clothes well, and there’s no plastic jug to end up in the trash. Very pleased with this product.”
– Amazon review from Jennifer A. Ladeau

“I have switched to TruEarth Eco Strips. No more powder! They are amazing. No big plastic bottles, no powder mess, no plastic scoops, friendly to the environment. They do a great job. I bought a large quantity, so cruise right past the washing powders/liquids in the supermarket with a slight air of superiority.”
Annie

“Excellent laundry detergent sheets. It works efficiently! Nothing more to say… Try them, use the first order appropriately. At first, you’ll be skeptical bc you’re used to your old way of POURING detergent. I’m telling you. You’ll be biased. But just keep using the detergent sheets, and you’ll be amazed by it! You’ll be saving the Earth as well.”
– Carlos A.

“It works great, the smell is pleasant, the fact I didn’t even need to use fabric softener, and it’s earth friendly. I love that my clothes come out clean, soft, and smelling fresh. No bottles jugs or containers to go into landfill. Recommended 10/10”
– Facebook review from Wendy Montenegro

“amazing!! works better than anything. I have cats and dogs, and no hair sticks to the fabric. highly recommend. I’ve tried the dishwasher cleaner, and it’s great too!”
– Facebook review from Nicole Frazee.
